Who are we looking for?

As a Design Director at Sketchin, you are willing to guide your own professional growth as design leader and mentor to your team and our clients.

You will lead the design vision on projects, capturing the Client’s ambition and turning them into meaningful and thorough design solutions.

Alongside the projects, you will also be in charge of Business Development activities to shape the Client's business perspective into projects for Sketchin.

You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of Innovators, Designers, Technologists and Data Scientists to define requirements and processes, and to ensure that the final solution is able to position the Client’s brand in the future.

What will you be doing?

Together with the Strategy Director and your Team, you will elaborate innovative, omni-channel, end-to-end strategies and experiences, lead the definition of concepts and prototypes, even at organizational level, provide guidance and support to projects involving business strategy, and evaluate deliverables to ensure that they meet the established requirements.

You will be a passionate advocate of the Sketchin brand and culture.

Your consultative and thorough approach will make Clients feel comfortable with the entire Sketchin end-to-end innovation and design process and services, fostering relationships with decision makers - frequently at C-Level, sometimes VP-Level -, supporting them to face challenges in innovation within complex global organizations, building long term relationships and finally achieving account revenue goals.

You will guide your team through the different stages of a project, acting as their advocate in front of the client and as their mentor in the everyday activities that will cover all spectrum of design projects, from strategy to delivery.

What do we expect from you?

Being the design leader of your team, you will facilitate them to flow through the project as you’ve shaped it, by helping them in understanding the value of each single step of the process and the design techniques that will be applied.

We need you to be critical and open to challenge yourself and your vision, both with the client and the team, in order to build the most valuable outcome for both of them.

Guiding a team in Sketchin means to trust it, helping and making it feel at ease when discovering new design fields in which you might not have had experience in the past, along with spreading the design culture that’s shaped at the heart of our company.

You will be constantly living out of your comfort zone and you will need to truly understand and embrace our working process in order to survive and be rewarded with great design outcomes and self-esteem.

You will need to be flexible and open minded in order to adapt to our lean methodology and agile mindset, as well as being a thorough advocate of our core values both within your team and with our clients.

Overview of your responsibilities

  1. Managing projects: you will define and shape the ideal design process to tackle the challenge presented by the brief, in order to produce the best possible output, while respecting the agreed project margin and guaranteeing a correct life-work balance to the people of your team;
  2. Managing people: you will be a trusted mentor and supporter to your team. In Sketchin we profess the "servant leadership" model, capable of active listening and focused on being a valuable leader to a team of seniors;
  3. A ‘Black belt’ in injecting the value of the experience when business meets design: you are a master in the practices of Human-Centered Design and Design Thinking to build Brand Experience, Customer Experience, User Experience as key business differentiators;
  4. Business developer: you will be challenged weekly to produce and pitch the best possible project proposal to answer the challenges that clients bring to our table, blending your creativity with some business acumen;
  5. Backlog owner: you are the undisputed owner of the weekly backlog of your team and you are ultimately responsible for the outcome of every sprint;
  6. Storyteller: you can pitch a design vision to all levels of management, from CEO to product managers, and are confident in telling stories that make your design views tangible;
  7. Understanding the strategic landscape of the customer, boosting also industry vertical solutions, products and services, which can foster new business opportunities and investments across the full range of Sketchin’s offering, activating the domains of innovation and business modeling, experience and design, data and technology, organization development and process improvement, therefore simplifying the implementation of business transformation;
  8. Understanding technology: you have to be aware of new technologies and be able to see them from a new and human-oriented perspective;
  9. Actively contributing to the activities of the design studio, by providing your point of view to the team as well as building on top the ones that are constantly shared amongst the Design Council.

What is required to be selected?

  1. 8+ years of experience in a design studio, with at least two years in a managerial role;
  2. A compelling portfolio of projects in which you’ve not only executed, but you’ve also been the owner of the design vision and you've defined the design process in a multidisciplinary team;
  3. Experience in projects within large and complex organizations, together with the ability to arrange large and complex project proposals;
  4. Experience in Agile management of large and complex projects, from the initial phase to completion, with keen attention to: backlog creation and prioritisation, budget estimation, definition of outcomes, stakeholders and team management;
  5. Storytelling: ability to engage both the Client’s and Sketchin’s teams members through public speaking, together with analytical, verbal, writing and presentation skills;
  6. A problem solving mentality, being a reference point in managing expectations and identifying the resolution of issues;
  7. Knowledge of the Agile methodology, the ability to work lean and iteratively on incomplete and impermanent situations;
  8. Deep knowledge of Design Thinking methods and tools is a must, applied to all steps of a project lifecycle: from research and understanding to the final pixel perfect delivery;
  9. ‘Black belt’ in Keynote, proficient with all main design softwares, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma as well as with the main prototyping tools such as Invision App & Axure;
  10. Passion for excellence, curiosity, cultural openness, courage, impermanence; flexibility towards fast-changing situations, a pioneering spirit, a systemic approach and foresight attitude;
  11. Good work ethic and being a good team player;
  12. Business level ability in English, both in speaking and writing;
  13. Ambition: your success goes hand in hand with the success of Sketchin as a leader design studio in Rome.

What might be appreciated?

  1. Being an active leader in the design community of Rome;
  2. Having a deep understanding of our client’s business and being able to speak also that ‘language’;
  3. Being familiar with business terms such as budget planning, forecasting and account planning;
  4. Having a knowledge and interest in emerging technologies and how design can interpret them;
  5. Previous experience in highly strategic scenarios, working together with more traditional consulting teams;
  6. Curiosity about innovation and R&D opportunities 
  7. History of injecting design team and practices within wider transformation projects;
  8. Deep knowledge of Agile Scrum and how it can be applied outside of development teams;
  9. Previous experience in Design Education;
  10. Proficiency in more languages other than Italian and English.
